Question Why????

Why are there some objectives (B&L made them) that are specified to be used without a cover slip? What if one were to try and use it with a prepared slide (with a cover slip)?

Hi Springerswimmer,

I don't know B&L microscopes at all, however, high dry objectives corrected for use with out coverslips are intended for objects like etched metals and polished mineral samples. Oil immersion objectives with extremely high NA may require the omission of coverslips for two reasons, to allow the objective to approach close enough to the object and/or the coverslip may have too low a refractive index too allow the objective to achieve it's full resolving potential.

Some one else may have more/better knowledge on this.

Hope this helps.

Peter.
