Question Where do you buy?

Hey guys, I've just purchased a light microscope yet don't have any slides/cover slips. Where would you recommend buying these things? I live in Canada.

Before I retired, I was buying my supplies from scientific supply houses like Fisher Scientific, VWR, and others that I have managed to blot out of my memory in the last twelve years. Last year I felt compelled to get a good research microscope to play with, and I got my scope, slides, and cover slips on eBay.

Now that you are retired and using your research microscope bring us up to date. What sort of scope are you using and what are you looking at ? As far as the slides and cover slips go, there are any number of sources through the microscope vendors that sell on line.

Ha! Retirement is tough. Way too many projects. The good news is that I was able to score an old Leitz Ortholux for $330. Cleaned up nicely, and the optics are good, though I can't recite them off the top of my head. If I had time, I would probably be looking at aquatic organisms with some terrestrial arthropods thrown in to keep things interesting. I'm interested in parasites, but they are a little harder to come by -- as specimens, that is.

Ah, yes... the venerable Ortholux. The money you spent acquiring your microscope will probably be a drop in the bucket, as they say, as you spend more and more time looking for the next accessory you cannot live with out. I know a couple of other retired sorts who are using the Ortholux and the search is eternal.

After spending thousands of hours glued to a microscope, I think I'm pretty immune to AAS (Accessory Acquisition Syndrome). However, I have to confess that I have looked at some accessories.

I guess I need to take the same pill you are using. I can't resist an opportunity to add something to the scope. I'm just lucky I am no good at ebay.

The pill seems to be specific to microscopes. Doesn't seem to work for banjos. Or Nikon cameras. Or Land Rovers. Or....
