I'm interested in purchasing this microscope. I know it's low priced for a binocular compound microscope, and I am wondering, Is it worth it? I want it as a hobby and to replace my aging monocular MS with an oil-immersion lens.
I want to do general biological work with it. and I want to know if there is is a dark field condenser that could be used with it. I would like to observe live bacteria. Is this just a cheap toy-like microscope or is it solid and rugged? Could I used "Society-sized" objectives and eye pieces with it? Thanks, Paul |

I think you would get more bang for your buck if you bought a used model from one of the major manufacturers. For example, I just bought a ~1967 Leitz Ortholux for less than $350.

I would suggest you avoid Konus. I would stick with one of the big three, (Nikon, Olympus, or Leica). Depending on your budget, you might also want to consider LABO or ACCU-SCOPE if you're limited by funds. Labo and Accu-scope are the only two lesser quality microscopes that I would consider in the event you do decide to upgrade to dark field. If I had my druthers, I would go with the Nikon E 200 which comes with plan objectives, 4x, 10x, 40x, and 100x oil. It's also fully upgradeable to darkfield. Accuscope also makes a small microscope that is engineered to be upgraded to darkfield should you so chose. |

Immersion oil has been formulated so that it has a refractive index identical to that of glass. Thus, by reducing the number of such passages to a minimum, the clarity, brilliance and resolving power is preserved.
