Default Purchasing microscope

Hi there, I'm new to this forum and nice to meet you all. I'm kinda in a situation where I want to buy a microscope, but I don't know a lot about it. I have had a lot of experience with high school microscope and I find that they don't give the sharpest image which I'm looking for. I want to get a microscope and I don't just want an ordinary one, I want one that is a bit better but reasonable price around $600 +/-$50? Any brand that is particularly quality built and durable? Thanks

Default Good reconditioned microscopes

Welcome to the group fatox318. It's great to have another contributor in the forum. I just happen to have MANY good reconditioned microscopes that I would be happy to visit with you about. You may contact me in a personal email if you wish at gw2brown@earthlink.net.
If I get a moment I'll try to post some example photos from some of the scopes I have.

ajo,
It's been a while since I've visited. I am so involved at the present that I will not be able to spare the time for alot of photos. I'm trying to get my "hobby" going and take a few photos. If anyone has any specific questions they can contact me. g2b2

Hi 'ajo', g2b2, and welcome 'fatox318'. 1) What sort of microscopy are you thinking of using the 'soon to be bought scope' for?

2) Do you want to 'image/ share images with folks on-line/ print images?

3) Will you have a 'table area for your microscopy at home', or do you want a scope to:'take on vacation to woodlands/ to sea shore?

4) Any other friends /family members who will also use this scope?

Sorry I 'missed your visit to forum, 'fatox318'....charlie guevara NJ,US

Remember in buying a microscope value is more important than price. .... You also need to know what profit they have to have beforethey will loose money.

Do not be in a rush to purchase a scope. Take some time to examine the scopes available from online firms (even if you have a brick and mortar store nearby). Scribble down features and compare those then Google a bit to learn the meaning of what is not familiar. This way you will find the most likely to satisfy. When purchasing be sure the firm is reliable (ask who others, who they have dealt with) and what is their return policy. Most will require repacking in their Styrofoam or other padding, if you return it, so don't throw away the packaging. Get a commitment from the firm as to when [IN WRITING] a check will be cut before returning. Be sure you become familiar with optics measurements so you can obtain the field of view and depth of view that will satisfy you. Scan over features mentioned by Ajo and others, like Ajo's dark field filter and other characteristics that you may not have been given an introduction to. Example: binoc vs monoc viewing advantages and disadvantages.
