Beautiful photos.

What is the magnification of the diatom?

Thanks. I think the magnification was about 200x.

Lovely images Mintaka, but then I always enjoy wet-mount freshwater microscopy!

The green is so relaxing in that algae 'forest' image you shared. I'm pretty sure those are diatoms arranged on the algae strands(epiphytes) , similar to orchids (sp?), or spanishmoss being 'epiphytic' in rainforest conditions.

Thanks for shareing your images in this forum, Mintaka! charlie guevara, fingerlakes/US

Hi Mintaka,

Your "fish parasite" apears to be anaquatic insect lava, in what association did you find it which made you infer it was parasitic ?

Peter, I think you are quite right. Its probably the larvae of a midge. I saw what looked like hooks on the animal and naively assumed it was designed for grabbing hold onto a host. We live and learn.

Hi Mintaka,

I saw a similar animal some years ago actively feeding on spirogyra. Unfortunatly did not photograph so I only have memory for comparison.
