Default microscopy in winter gets under the ice.

Hello all, in northeast NJ/NY,US border highlands...no mosquitoes in winter months. Hikeing is great, tracks in snow, plenty of active wildlife still...and no mosquitoes!

Microscopy of pondlife of winter, or of moss/plant roots in winter...it's all there...just get through the ice, collect from wetlands(low lands that is, streams, or frozen moss assemblages on rockfaces. So on next hike...take a large plastic container...collect a simple sample from under the ice. charlie guevara NJ,US

Thank you for this. I am expecting my first microscope to arrive this Friday, Dec 3, and I wasn't sure if I'd be able to find much pond life during the winter.

I will surely go to the nearby pond and get some algea, scum, and water in the next couple of days.

When you get some water don't be disappointed if there isn't anything at first. After a while (7-10 days and more) you start to see all sorts of critters lurking around. I have an aquatic snail in one of my jars that had only volvox when I got it.

Congrats on that microscope due on Fri: 12/03 ( I always wonder how doctors set such 'due dates'!??).

Please, if possible take a simple 'point&shoot' image of your new microscope...and then please get back to this forums image galleries to share in 'your scope'...too share in what your observation directions will be!

As you already noted going outdoors for samples to observe, I am eargerlly rooting for your microscopy enjoyment. Take care this winter season, charlie guevara, fingerlakes/US
